It is the appropriate operation for the majority of patients, because in most cases arthritis has affected more than one compartment of the knee by the time surgery is being considered.

Partial (Unicompartmental) Knee Replacement

Unicompartmental replacement resurfaces only the medial compartment – the point where arthritis begins in most people – leaving the rest of the joint untouched. Where it is suitable, it offers a smaller incision, a shorter recovery, possibly better range of movement than a total replacement, and a lower risk of complications.

It is not suitable for everyone. It is ruled out by arthritis in more than one compartment, which is the situation for the majority of patients needing replacement, and also by inflammatory arthropathies, coexisting ligament instability, and in obese and elderly patients. Whether it is an option for you is established from your imaging and examination, not from preference.

The Implant and How Long It Lasts

A knee implant consists of metal components attached to the femur and tibia, with a durable polyethylene insert that allows smooth joint movement. The exact implant is selected according to the patient’s anatomy, lifestyle and the surgeon’s assessment.

Modern knee implants are designed to withstand everyday activity for many years. Most last more than 20 years, while the latest-generation implants can often remain functional for 25 to 30 years when surgery is performed by an experienced knee specialist and followed by appropriate rehabilitation. As a result, revision surgery is required only in a small minority of patients.

Pre-Operative Planning and Technology

Modern technology has significantly improved the precision of knee replacement surgery while allowing treatment to be tailored to each patient’s anatomy.

Customised guides. A pre-operative CT scan is used to create patient-specific cutting guides, helping position the implants more accurately.

Navigation. Computer navigation provides the surgeon with real-time positional data throughout the procedure.

Robotic assistance. Robotic-assisted knee replacement combines pre-operative planning with real-time guidance to achieve highly accurate implant positioning. This may improve joint function, preserve healthy tissue, reduce post-operative pain and support faster recovery.

These technologies help improve implant positioning and surgical precision, but they remain tools.

The experience and judgement of the orthopaedic surgeon remain the most important factors in achieving an excellent long-term result.

The Procedure and Fast-Track Recovery

Anaesthesia is either general or spinal, in which case you are awake under light sedation during the operation. Stopping physiotherapy once the pain settles is the most frequent – feeling better is not the same as having recovered movement and strength, and stiffness that sets in during the early weeks is far harder to reverse later.

Returning to jogging or demanding activity before the knee is ready loads the implant and surrounding tissue prematurely, while immobility is the opposite error: walking is the treatment, and it begins on the day of surgery. Increasing pain, redness, heat, fever or sudden swelling should be reported rather than waited out.

Results and Longevity

Patient satisfaction after knee replacement is around 95-98%. Most patients experience significant or complete relief of arthritic pain, return to normal daily activities, improved strength and stability, and the ability to resume light sporting activities.

Many also report sleeping through the night without pain within the first few days after surgery. With modern implants lasting 20-30 years, knee replacement offers a long-term rather than temporary solution.

Risks and Complications

Knee replacement is a safe procedure with success rates of 95-98%, although, as with any operation, complications are possible.

These include:

Infection (<1%), usually treated with antibiotics or surgical washout

Deep vein thrombosis, reduced with anticoagulants and early mobilisation

Implant loosening over time, which may require revision surgery

Rare nerve, vessel or periprosthetic injuries

Joint stiffness, usually managed with intensive physiotherapy

The experience of the surgeon and accurate implant positioning remain the most important factors in minimising complications.

Arthrojoint — Appointment CTA banner (EN)

  /* ---------------------------------------------------------------
     Arthrojoint — appointment CTA banner, English version
     Self-contained: paste the block and the
below
     into a WordPress Custom HTML block.
     Replace the two --aj-img-* URLs with the shoulder / knee artwork
     already used on the Greek banner.
  ----------------------------------------------------------------*/

  .aj-cta {
    --aj-navy: #1b2a63;
    --aj-navy-hover: #16224f;
    --aj-text: #1b2a63;
    --aj-bg-from: #ffffff;
    --aj-bg-to: #e8f1fb;
    --aj-dot: rgba(27, 42, 99, .12);

    /* Artwork: replace with the client's existing images */
    --aj-img-left: url("images/shoulder.png");
    --aj-img-right: url("images/knee.png");

    position: relative;
    isolation: isolate;
    overflow: hidden;
    padding: clamp(2.5rem, 7vw, 5.5rem) clamp(1.25rem, 5vw, 3rem);
    text-align: center;
    background:
      radial-gradient(circle at 50% 45%, var(--aj-bg-from) 0%, var(--aj-bg-to) 100%);
    font-family: "Inter", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif;
  }

  /* Faint dot grid, as on the Greek banner */
  .aj-cta::before {
    content: "";
    position: absolute;
    inset: 0;
    z-index: -2;
    background-image: radial-gradient(var(--aj-dot) 1.5px, transparent 1.6px);
    background-size: 34px 34px;
    opacity: .55;
  }

  /* Anatomy artwork, left and right */
  .aj-cta__art {
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    bottom: 0;
    width: clamp(140px, 24%, 320px);
    z-index: -1;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-size: contain;
    pointer-events: none;
  }
  .aj-cta__art--left {
    left: 0;
    background-image: var(--aj-img-left);
    background-position: left center;
  }
  .aj-cta__art--right {
    right: 0;
    background-image: var(--aj-img-right);
    background-position: right center;
  }

  .aj-cta__inner {
    position: relative;
    max-width: 44rem;
    margin-inline: auto;
  }

  .aj-cta__headline {
    margin: 0 0 clamp(1.25rem, 3vw, 2rem);
    color: var(--aj-text);
    font-size: clamp(1.25rem, 3.2vw, 2rem);
    font-weight: 500;
    line-height: 1.35;
    letter-spacing: -.01em;
  }

  .aj-cta__phone {
    font-weight: 700;
    color: var(--aj-navy);
    text-decoration: none;
    white-space: nowrap;
  }
  .aj-cta__phone:hover,
  .aj-cta__phone:focus-visible {
    text-decoration: underline;
    text-underline-offset: .18em;
  }

  .aj-cta__button {
    display: inline-flex;
    align-items: center;
    gap: .75em;
    padding: clamp(.85rem, 1.6vw, 1.15rem) clamp(2rem, 4vw, 3rem);
    border-radius: 999px;
    background: var(--aj-navy);
    color: #fff;
    font-size: clamp(1rem, 1.6vw, 1.25rem);
    font-weight: 500;
    text-decoration: none;
    transition: background-color .18s ease;
  }
  .aj-cta__button:hover {
    background: var(--aj-navy-hover);
  }
  .aj-cta__button:focus-visible {
    outline: 3px solid var(--aj-navy);
    outline-offset: 3px;
  }
  .aj-cta__button svg {
    flex: none;
    width: 1.1em;
    height: 1.1em;
  }

  /* On narrow screens the artwork crowds the text — fade it back */
  @media (max-width: 600px) {
    .aj-cta__art { opacity: .35;
